The ABCDE Model

The ABCDE model is a CBT concept that emphasizes how our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs determine our actions. The acronym stands for:

A: Activating Event

  • The situation that triggers the unwanted response

B: Belief

  • The thoughts and beliefs about A

C: Consequence

  • The behaviors that result from B

D: Dispute

  • Challenging the thoughts and beliefs at B

E: Exchange

  • Replace the old irrational thoughts and beliefs with new, rational, and balanced ones.

The model is split into halves with ABC first, then DE after. This is because the D and E are how to handle the ABC in a more effective way, resulting in a balanced response. If you only end at C, then the response will likely be irrational. It’s important to remember that you cannot control the activating event, only the following steps. It takes practice to able to dispute and exchange easily, so don’t give up and keep challenging your beliefs!

Lots of love,

Andrea
