Finding Your Core Values

Your top three core values are the select few values that define who you are as a person and what you stand for. It is incredibly important to recognize and understand what your core values are, especially when it comes to making decisions. Simply asking yourself “does this align with my core values?” can be enough to make the answer clear. It’s also important in defining your identity. Knowing your priorities, passions, and what matters most to you can be very enlightening.

Selecting your three core values is easier said than done, however. For some it may be a no-brainer, but for others it might be challenging to narrow down their list of values to just three. For those in the latter group, here’s an activity to help you find your core values.

Go through the values listed below and star any that resonate with you. You can also add any additional values if desired. Make a list of your starred values. Now, use a bracket system to narrow down your choices. For example, if your first two listed values are adventure and balance, choose the one you prioritize more. This can be difficult within itself, so listen to your instinct and don’t think too much about it. Once you’ve done this with each pair, repeat this process until you have three core values that you feel good about. Then, rejoice in knowing your core values!
